Jorge Castillo was born in Pontevedra, Galicia, in 1933 and grew up in Buenos Aires, where his family had emigrated the year after his birth. He returned to Spain in 1955, showed his first Surrealist ink drawings and gouaches in Madrid in 1959, and after Barcelona and Paris settled in Geneva in 1966, where printmaking entered his work.

A scholarship took him to Berlin in 1969; since the early 1980s he has been based in New York. One of the leading Spanish exponents of Surrealism and Art informel, he has shown at documenta in Kassel and at the São Paulo and Venice Biennales, and has made public sculptures for La Coruña, Messina and Barcelona.
